Doug McBirnie

Managing Director

Doug is a qualified actuary with extensive experience in superannuation in Australia and the UK. He joined Accurium in 2012 and is now the Senior Actuary and General Manager of Accurium. Doug graduated with honours from the University of Bristol in UK with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia and an SMSF Specialist Adviser.

Doug is passionate about all things retirement income and using his skills to improve the financial security of Australians in retirement. He believes choice is a vital element of Australia’s compulsory superannuation system and is a big supporter of SMSFs as the ultimate expression of that. He holds volunteer roles with both the SMSF Association and Actuaries Institute to help advocate for the sector.

As the signing actuary for Australia’s leading SMSF actuarial certificate provider, Doug signs more SMSF actuarial certificates than any other actuary in Australia which provides him with great insight into the SMSF market. Doug also gets to see a variety of approaches and strategies that are implemented for individual SMSFs.

Doug keeps up to date with current legislation and best practice in the industry and is a regular presenter on Accurium’s popular technical webinars. His depth of knowledge covers a wide range of technical issues and legislation requirements that relate to superannuation and SMSFs. As well as working in SMSF compliance, Doug provides actuarial advice to financial planners, accountants and lawyers to help them better advise their own clients.

Previously, Doug has worked as an actuarial consultant at a big four accounting firm in UK providing advice to superannuation scheme sponsors and trustees, including FTSE 100 companies. He has also worked as a project manager in both the UK and China.

A keen rugby player in his younger days, Doug now gets his kicks playing soccer including coaching his son’s school team. He is also a keen snowboarder and surfer who enjoys traveling to new destinations to follow his passion.
