Tax Issues in Divorce and Relationship Breakdowns

19 Nov 2026 12:00PM – 1:15PM AEDT

Relationship breakdowns often have significant tax consequences, yet these issues are frequently overlooked in the midst of negotiating property settlements and dealing with family law matters. Providing proactive tax advice at an early stage can help clients avoid costly mistakes, preserve valuable tax concessions and achieve more efficient long-term outcomes.

Using practical examples and common scenarios, we examine the tax implications of property settlements, the availability of rollover relief, and the interaction between family law and the tax system. We also consider the ongoing tax consequences that can arise long after the relationship has ended.
